Ache Memorial
Remembering the day when we were all American ... thoughts from across the water.?
Thursday is the anniversary of the day when we were all Americans ... a handshake across the water.
We haven't forgotten. Yes, of course, there are the obligatory anniversary television programmes - but I know of several local churches that will be holding memorial services; a number of schools and businesses that will stop for two minutes' silence; some families with small children who will be reminding them of what this day meant - and must continue to mean.
You may remember that our Queen gave personal instructions that American marches and anthems be played at the Changing of the Guard; she was in tears at the memorial service; and at Christmas she said that 'grief is the price we pay for love.' I'm writing to tell you that we haven't forgotten; that many hearts will ache tomorrow especially for the memory of your loss; that the plain folk of the UK will be thinking about you tomorrow.

Let's also not forget that:
On December 12 2002, 202 people, comprising mostly Australians and other westerners, were murdered by a bomb in a nightclub in Bali, Indonesia.
On March 11 2004, 191 people from 17 nations were murdered by a bomb attack in a train station in Madrid, Spain.
On July 7 2005, 52 people were murdered in London, Great Britain, by Islamic fanatics.
All the people who died were civilians who did not ask to fight in a war.
Not one of them were guilty of any of the vicious, delusional and misguided indictments issued by the murderers and those whom they represent.
Sept 11 is as good a time as any to remind ourselves that the USA need not be, and indeed isn't, alone in the war on terror. We have friends and allies, and we ought to be proud of them. They may not be as powerful as we are, but they certainly are no less on the front lines as we are.
