Rune readers. Another question for a beginner?

So I went out and bought some gems last night. They are oval and a very pale pink. I spent most of last night holding onto them and fingering each one individually to help them absorb my energies. So soon I should be able to start painting them. However, according to "Wicca: A guide for the solitary practitioner" by Scott Cunningham I should have twelve stones (although he lists a total of 28 runes between pages 188 & 196), but most of the sets I've have found online had closer to 24 stones. Which is best? Most common?

Depends on which runes you are making. Elder Futhark runes contain 24 symbols. Though many sets today have 25 stones, one being blank which is called "wyrd".

My rune sets are stored in black velvet drawstring pouches, black is a color that repels negative energies.

Added: Regarding the answer below me - "anyone talking about a blank rune should be ignored unless they're telling you to ignore the blank" ??? So, because I stated a simple fact that many of today's sets include a blank rune, I should be ignored? Nice. I know that including the blank rune is historically inaccurate, but sorry, I would not tell anybody that they must include it or must not include it if they got a set with one - it's completely up to them to make the determination.
