When Bats hang upside down does all their blood rush to their head?
My little bro was watching a children's TV Program this morning (Deadly sixty I think?) and Steve Backshall was in a cave full of bats. This got me thinking, when we hang upside down all the blood rushes to our heads and we go dizzy and can't feel our legs etc. But bats hang upside down all day and hold themselves up with their feet so iff they loose feeling there wouldn't they fall down?
Good question! Actually a bat's circulatory system works kind of the opposite of ours, as humans. Our heart pumps blood to our heads and into our brains with a lot of force. This is why, when we hang upside down, it doesn't feel so great. Not only is gravity pulling all the blood to our heads, but our heart is pumping that blood to our heads.
With bats, the heart doesn't pump blood to the brain the same way. They are a lot smaller, requiring a lot less force for one. And the circulatory system works on pumping that blood the opposite way.
Also, bats have more arteries and veins in their brains that allow blood to escape faster.
