Cards Divination
Using Tarot Cards for games?
I'm planning on using Tarot cards to play French Tarot. Now, I've heard the notion that these cards are evil or can carry evil spirits into your life. However, I have no intention whatsoever of using these cards for any type of mystical or divination way. They're simply for playing a game. Do you think that I should still avoid them?
The superstitions about demons and evil spirits entering into your life are based upon the erroneous belief that the cards have some kind of occult origin - this is not the case.
Playing cards developed from 9th century Chinese money games, which used suits such as Coins, and Stacks of Coins, which developed into what we call the round and the long suits. These are first seen in Europe during the 14th century from trade with the Islamic Mamluks of North Africa in packs much like our modern ones. They had 52 cards in four suits of Coins and Cups - the round suits - and Scimitars and Polo Sticks - the long suits. Each suit had 10 pip cards and three court cards being a King and two Soldiers.
The game of Polo was not known in Europe at that time, so the the Polo Sticks lost their paddle to become Batons. The court cards then became a King, a Rider, and a Footman. The result is what we call the Latin suits and these are Still used in card games played in Italy, Spain, and parts of South America. The queen was a later addition and a 56 card pack was, for a short while, a regional standard.
Tarot cards were invented in mid 15th century Italy for the Milanese court and consist of two parts: a standard pack of Latin suited playing cards with a fifth suit of picture cards. These extra cards took as their theme, not an occult philosophy but a Christian triumph procession, hence their early name of trionfi, meaning triumphs and from which we get our word trump. And this is what they were, a suit of fixed trumps for a family of card games that is still played throughout much of continental Europe today.
Contrary to popular myth, the church did not object to tarot cards, which were recognized as simply a game employing a great deal of Christian imagery. Indeed, there are cases where tarot cards were made exempt from regional bans on regular playing cards! Certainly, some people today feel that some of the images are heretical but a little history can put that myth to bed as well.
Consider for example, The Female Pope, often renamed The High Priestess by occultists. Many think this heretical but if we look to Renaissance Italy we find another story. Then, this was an established figure in Christian art being used to represent any number of things such as The Virtue of Faith to the New Covenant.
It was 350 years before there is any record of anyone employing the cards for divination or attaching any occult beliefs to them and for a further 100 years, these ideas and practices were limited to just France.
If you really are concerned about the images, then have an option for playing most (though not all) tarot games. Most countries use a pack of French suited pack (hearts, diamonds, clubs, and spades) with trumps that feature various rural or domestic scenes - through some are themed with movies, cartoon characters, regional costume, etc.
If you are going to venture into the world of tarot games, I do hope that you will go beyond the French game (excellent though it is), as there is a vast range of games played throughout continental Europe. My personal favourite is Ottocento, which is played in Bologna.
