What are the Japanese customs/traditions when one dies? How does it differ from the Christian ways?
Do they do the same coffin, then funeral parlor, then funeral thing?
Or is cremation more common?
What are on the graves?
Are there crosses? Or does it differ from religion to religion?
And something quite irrelevant... what time do elementary classes usually start in Japan?
Coffin is made from wood because it will be cremated later. On the Japanese tomb, there are flowers, small sweets and foods. There are no crosses nor other religious symbol in general but family crest is used for coffin and tombs sometimes.

lay a dead X in a coffin
hold a Tsuya for a night, which is keep vigil all night and keep sticks of incense burning. It is a time to remember X with family and relative only.
hold a funeral ceremony(Soushiki), most of them are Buddhism style. this time friends and coworkers are invited
hold a funeral service(Kokubetsushiki), literally goodbye ceremony
take X to a crematorium
bring back X to home, which is, X's bones in a pot
put this in front of a family Buddhist altar for a certain weeks
bring him to family tomb
It changes by his sect. And Japanese are not so devote to religions so in most of the case funeral parlor/companies play a role.
