How to enter the blackthorn gym in crystal?

Hi everybody. Well, I recently found a cool free version of pokemon crystal online, and have gotten pretty far. I am in Blackthorn city, but can't go into the gym because there is aguy standing outside that says "Our gym leader claire is in the dragon's den". Also, it wont let me enter the dragons den.

It should let you go in cause when I played it i kilkled claire and went up to the guy spoke to him and he let me in if this does not help go into google and type in pokemon crystal walkthrough
