Geode Brazil
How can I wash dye off a geode?
For Christmas I received a beautiful blue agate geode. But the back of the geode was stained with blue dye that rubs off onto my hands whenever I hold it. It says its from Brazil on the bottom.
How can I safely remove the dye from the geode without damaging it? Thank you.
Unless it's a frighteningly fragile geode (which, if it's there, it probably isn't), you can wash it in the sink, or out in the yard with a thumb over the end of a hose. I have to tell you, though, I actually go out and dig up large geodes (shh, i don't dig where it's legal... those places have already been tapped...), and I have a rock saw, and polisher sequence... and it's awesome. But sometimes, the very fine layer of polishing grit somehow manages to get stuck to the back of the geode, in the cracks and all... I own a 2000 psi pressure hose for cleaning the house, and *it* couldn't blast the stuff off!!
My point isn't to make you give up or anything, just that in some cases, the parent rock is just perfectly textured and pored that things just don't come out. So it it doesn't get un-blue... just enjoy it!
