A 100 g granite cube slides down a 35 degree frictionless ramp.?
A 100 g granite cube slides down a 35 degree frictionless ramp. At the bottom, just as it exits onto a horizontal table, it collides with a 215 g steel cube at rest.
How high above the table should the granite cube be released to give the steel cube a speed of 200 cm/s?
How do I solve this? Please help me!
Assuming that the horizontal table is frictionless, you need to first calculate the force needed to push a 215g cube at 200 cm/s. You might want to consider converting the units m/s for SI units.
Once you've figured out what that force is, you need to take into account that that is the horizontal force needed to push the cube... meaning that is the horizontal force needed from the 100g cube.
Sliding down a ramp, the force generated by that 100g is parallel to the ramp, so the force it will exert on that 215g is a factor of that force, so you'll need to use sine or cosine to figure out the horizontal force exerted by that 100g cube. The force of that cube is the mass types the acceleration of the earth, ie. gravity.
Essentially, your equation will look like:
(force needed to move 215g cube) = (horizontal force of 100g cube)
(horizontal force of 100g cube) = 215 g x 9.8 m/s x (sine or cosine)(35 degrees).
The sine or cosine depends on if the slope is in relation to the horizontal plane or the vertical plane.
